What does being an esthetician mean to you?

I think a lot of people don’t really know what is going on in the esthetic world.

We often don’t progress past the day that we graduate beauty school. We think we have learned it all.

So I would like to address the fact that as estheticians, you will be learning throughout your entire career. Yes, the ENTIRE time.

We continuously learn, whether it be on the job, from books, from other estheticians, or classes we may take.

I have had the experience of meeting estheticians from all over the world, and the core theme has been “I have been an esthetician for ‘x’ amount of time, and this is what I am going to do”.

It’s always an interesting time when you meet estheticians who want to learn.

We all need to understand:

  • You need multiple strings of income
  • You need to have multiple understanding of what your jobs is
  • You need to understand what you can do, and what you can’t do.

In order to have a firm grasp of all that, you need to be willing to learn and grow with the industry.

More often than not, when injury occurs during treatment it is the estheticians’ fault.

None of us like to hear that.

Just because we learn new things, doesn’t mean we have to run out and do it. It’s simply supplying ourselves with knowledge.

Successful estheticians not only do what they do very well, but they like to make it simple.

You have to remember to network with estheticians that inspire you, the ones that are moving their business and going places.

With that, you can often inspire each other to remain open to learning new things.

It’s good to have your staples, but just remain open.

If you ever feel like you’re stuck, or you can sense yourself closing off get out there and do something.

As estheticians we should attend at least one show a year, and take two continuing education courses a year to maintain knowledge of our industry.

Shows are great, because they’re free knowledge!

You can really get out there and see what other people are using, see what new machines are becoming popular, and learn new techniques.

At shows you don’t even need to buy things, you just have to look around.

If you want to grow your clientele, you have to take care of your existing clients!
